Tell your Legislators to Vote 'No' on Reinstatement

The fight is not over. Even as we celebrate repeal HB 1738, a bill to reinstate the death penalty may come up for a vote in the House. The bill would restore the broken death penalty system that the Illinois General Assembly abolished only a few months ago.

Your action is required. Please give your representatives a call as soon as possible asking them to vote 'No' on HB 1738. You can reach them by calling the capitol switchboard number at (217) 782-2000 and asking for your legislator by name.

Gov. Quinn Signs SB 3539 and Repeals the Death Penalty!

The historic moment has arrived! Today, March 9th, 2011 Illinois joins the ranks of New Jersey, New Mexico, and New York in repealing the death penalty. This morning at 11:30am, Gov. Quinn signed SB 3539 into law and commuted the sentences of the 15 people currently on death row. Illinois no longer has a death penalty! Please take a minute to call the Governor and thank him for making this monumental decision OR send him an e-mail by clicking this link:

Though Quinn's was the final signature, there was no small part in this decades-long effort for repeal, and each of us should take pride in what we accomplished together. We could not have done this without your dedication and support.

From all of us at the Coalition: Thank You.

And now, let's celebrate!
